The Stanley Livingstone Expedition 2008 will retrace the route taken by American Journalist Henry Morton Stanley in 1871. This was the historic journey from Bagamoyo to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa, when he found Dr. David Livingstone, the famous British Explorer/Missionary and uttered his famous greeting, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?".

I am on the Board of Directors for SLE and I have headed back to Tanzania to join my team members for this wonderful twice-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

With this expedition comes a twist: I am asking readers to sponsor one of two charitable organizations I have chosen to support, by pledging so much per mile that I actually walk from Bagamoyo to Ujiji, Tanzania.

The reasons:

  • It gives me a goal – It gives me incentive to walk one more mile.
  • It gives me a voice in the back of my head that you at home are interested – interested in my progress even if you’re hoping I don’t walk too many miles!
  • It gives me a purpose - It makes the walking even more worthwhile knowing that some of the people I meet along the way may benefit from my walk.

Choosing a recipient organization for my fundraising was difficult. I have seen many worthy NGO’s and needy groups in Tanzania, but I have no hesitation in deciding on “Feed the Children – Tanzania” after meeting the Country Director, David Smith during my visit there last July. I spent time with David, visiting his projects and listening to his future plans. Go online to Feed The Children then view their ratings on Better Business Bureau website.

My second choice is Rotary International of which I am a proud member and a Paul Harris Fellow.
